Music Australia:
Music is a human expression in the medium of time using the structures of sounds or tones and silence.
It is expressed in terms of pitch, rhythm, harmony, and timbre. The earliest music of Australia was the folk music of the Australian Aborigines. Aboriginal music declined after European colonisation, and has only recently begun to be revived,
often with modernised influences.
Bands like Yothu Yindi have generated an increased interest in Aboriginal music in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Australia has also been home to notable classical composers as well as artists working in popular music genres such as rock, jazz, country, Gospel music and electronic music.
Dance:
A wide variety of dance occurs in Australia. Classical ballet companies include the Australian Ballet.
Other ballet and contemporary dance companies include the Australian Dance Theatre, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Leigh Warren & Dancers and the Sydney Dance Company. The Australian Dance Council (or Ausdance) is the peak body for dance in Australia.
The Australian version of Dancing with the Stars has led to increased awareness and popularity of dance and dancesport.
Bush dance has developed in Australia as a form of traditional dance, it draws on traditions from English, Irish, Scottish and other European dance. Favourite dances in the community include dances of European descent, such as the Irish Céilidh "Pride of Erin" and the quadrille "The Lancers" and number of "home-grown" dances, such as the "Waves of Bondi".
Many immigrant communities continue their own dance traditions on a professional or amateur basis.
Traditional dances from a large number of ethnic backgrounds are danced in Australia, helped by the presence of enthusiastic immigrants and their Australian-born families.
It is quite common to see dances from the Baltic region, as well as Indian, Indonesian or African dance being taught at community centres in Australia.
Still more dance groups in Australia employ dances from a variety of backgrounds, including reconstructed European Court dances and Medieval Dance, as well as fusions of traditional steps with modern music and stylings.
The corroborree is one example of Indigenous Australian ceremony including dance.
Cinema:
Cinema is one of the big entertainment sources in Australia. The cinema of Australia has a long history and has produced many internationally recognized films and world-famous actors and filmmakers, although it has frequently suffered from an underfunded industry. It was first started in 1891.
Arguably The Salvation Army in Melbourne, Australia, operated one of the world's first film studios, the Limelight Department between 1891 and 1910. The first 'boom' in Australian film occurred in the 1910s. After beginning slowly in the years from 1900, 1910 saw 4 narrative films released, then 51 in 1911, 30 in 1912, and 17 in 1913, and back to 4 in 1914, the beginning of World War I.. During the 1970s, government funding for Australian filmmakers was increased, and a generation of directors and actors emerged who told distinctively Australian stories. The Australian film industry continues to produce a reasonable number of films each year. Many US producers have moved productions to Australian studios as they discover a pool of professional talent well below US costs. Studios established in Australia, like Fox Studios Australia and Warner Bros. Movie World, host large international productions like The Matrix and Star Wars II and III.
The Australian film industry has produced a number of successful actors and directors, most of whom have moved on to Hollywood. These include actors Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Geoffrey Rush and Russell Crowe, directors Peter Weir, Mario Andreacchio and Baz Luhrmann, and associated production experts.
Radio Broadcasting:
Radio Broadcasting was first established in Australia in 1932. At 8.00pm on 1 July 1932, the Prime Minister Joseph Lyons inaugurated the ABC. The ABC then controlled twelve stations - 2FC and 2BL in Sydney, 3AR and 3LO in Melbourne, 4QG in Brisbane, 5CL in Adelaide, 6WF in Perth, 7ZL in Hobart and the relay stations 2NC in Newcastle, 2CO at Corowa, 4RK in Rockhampton and 5CK at Crystal Brook. Radio Australia increasingly developed an Asian Pacific focus. Its primary target areas became the South West and Central Pacific, South-East and South Asia and North Asia. Radio Australia played an important role with special broadcasts during the Fiji coup in 1988, the Tiananmen Square crisis in China in 1989 and to Australian hostages and expatriates in the Middle-East during the Gulf crisis in 1990. Since 1988, segments of Radio Australia programs have been broadcast for domestic audiences on Radio National.
Television:
Television is again another good source of entertainment. The first words spoken on Australian television were on TCN (the communication network) Sydney, 16 September 1956, by Bruce Gyngell. The words he spoke were: "Good evening and welcome to television". Australian television channels include two government owned national networks, three major commercial capital city networks, several regional commercial networks and independent stations that are generally affiliates of the major networks, and a handful of community stations. There are two govrnnent owned channels, that are, ABC Tv & ABC2, SBS TV. The Imparja channel is half owned by government and half by private sector. Other commercial channels are Seven Network Nine Network , Network Ten. Regional and remote networks are : Golden West Network (GWN), Imparja , NBN Television , Prime Television , Seven Queensland , Southern Cross Television , Southern Cross Ten , WIN Television , WIN Ten
